Ghanaian actor and comedian Kalybos has shared a heartwarming story about how a spontaneous gesture of kindness in 2016 led to an unexpected windfall, a cheque for GH₵100,000.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z with arts and culture journalist Kwame Dadzie, Kalybos, born Richard Asante, recounted a memorable encounter with a fan and his children while stuck in traffic on the Osu road in Accra.

“One time, I was caught in heavy traffic on the Osu road when a car pulled up beside mine. Inside were a man and his excited kids who recognized me and wanted a photo,” he recalled. “The father told them it wasn’t possible because of the traffic, but I looked ahead and saw the road wasn’t moving. So I got out, asked if I could join them in the back seat, and we took pictures. The man was stunned. He just kept looking at me — then he asked for my number.”

Kalybos explained that the man, who often visits Ghana to spend time with his children, later called him. During a conversation, the man shared a previous negative experience at a mall, where his children had been dismissed by a popular actress when they asked for a photo.

Moved by Kalybos’ humility and kindness, the man invited him to his office for a chat. What happened next left the comedian speechless.

“We had a short conversation, and then he handed me an envelope. Something told me to open it immediately. When I did, I found a cheque inside GH₵100,000. It was the biggest ‘free bono money’ I’ve ever received,” he said with a laugh.

Kalybos used the unexpected gift to purchase his second car, a decision that marked a significant milestone in his career.

Best known for his role in the hit comedy series Boys Kasa, where he starred alongside actress Ahoufe Patri, Kalybos has since become a household name in Ghana. His film credits include Kalybos in China, Amakye and Dede, and John and John. Beyond acting, he has also featured in various brand campaigns and remains one of Ghana’s most recognizable comedic talents of the last decade.
