The Confederation of African Football (CAF) sensationally stripped Senegal of their Africa Cup of Nations crown handing the title to Morocco in a decision that has ignited outrage, disbelief, and biting sarcasm from the Teranga Lions’ dressing room.
The controversy stems from the dramatic final clash in Rabat on January 18, where Senegal briefly walked off the pitch in protest of a contentious penalty decision. Despite the interruption, they returned after 14 minutes and battled to a 1–0 victory in extra time, courtesy of a decisive strike from Pape Gueye.
However, in a late twist on Tuesday, CAF’s Appeal Board overturned the result awarding Morocco a 3–0 victory and, with it, the AFCON title. The decision has since been met with fierce backlash from players, officials, and fans alike.
Rather than issuing formal protests, several Senegalese players took to social media with a mix of humor, sarcasm, and quiet defiance.
Midfielder Pathe Ciss posted a celebratory photo holding the trophy, joking: “You can give the crybabies three more goals” complete with a laughing emoji.
Teammate Mamadou Lamine Camara added fuel to the fire, quipping: “Who will come and collect our medals?” while cheekily asking when Morocco’s victory parade would take place.

At the heart of the defense, Moussa Niakhate shared an image from the final moments in Rabat, writing: “This is not AI, this is real,” underscoring the authenticity of Senegal’s on-field triumph.
Defender El Hadji Malick Diouf was more direct: “This trophy is won on the pitch, not by email.”
Forward Boulaye Dia echoed the sentiment with a more emotional tone: “You don’t create emotions; you have to experience them.”
Meanwhile, veteran midfielder Idrissa Gueye struck a philosophical note on Instagram, reminding fans that while titles may be taken away, memories cannot:
“We know what we lived that evening in Rabat. And no one can take that away from us.”
The Senegalese Football Federation has strongly condemned CAF’s ruling, labeling it “unfair, unprecedented and unacceptable.” Calls for justice have gone beyond football, with the Government of Senegal urging an independent international investigation into the matter.
On the other side, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation welcomed the verdict, maintaining that their appeal was focused solely on ensuring the competition rules were correctly enforced.
CAF has yet to publicly respond to the growing criticism.
What was once a hard-fought final has now become one of the most controversial decisions in AFCON history. For Senegal’s players, the message is clear: regardless of official rulings, their victory was earned where it matters most on the pitch.
As the debate intensifies, African football finds itself grappling not just with a disputed result, but with deeper questions about fairness, governance, and the spirit of the game.
