Ghanaian actress Gloria Sarfo has publicly criticized the organizers of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAAs) following a travel debacle that left a group of Ghanaian filmmakers stranded at Kotoka International Airport. The incident, which occurred as the 20th edition of the prestigious AMAAs took place in Lagos, Nigeria.

Gloria Sarfo took to social media to express her frustration, recounting how she and other prominent Ghanaian filmmakers, including Abdul Salam Mumuni, Frank Rajah, Pascal Amanfo, and Akorfa Adjeani, were left in a difficult situation due to unconfirmed flight tickets. According to Gloria Sarfo, the organizers had promised an all-expenses-paid trip to the awards, complete with flight details and itinerary, but the reality was far from what had been assured.

“You can’t tell me that you are giving me an all-expense paid trip, and then I get stranded at the airport. It doesn’t work that way,” Gloria Sarfo exclaimed in a video shared online. She went on to highlight the sacrifices she and others made, including missed movie sets, film premieres, and other important engagements, all to represent Ghana at the AMAAs.

Sarfo’s disappointment did not stop at the flight issues. She noted that despite knowing of the ticket problems, AMAA organizers failed to communicate any updates or support, leaving the group confused and feeling disrespected. “It was embarrassing,” she said, emphasizing the lack of regard shown to the Ghanaian film industry representatives who were set to showcase their achievements on a continental stage.

Reports also indicate that those who eventually made it to the awards in Lagos faced additional challenges, with several team members encountering accommodation issues upon arrival. The incident has sparked a wave of criticism from fans, industry professionals, and members of the Ghanaian creative community, who are calling for better treatment and respect for Ghanaian talent at international events.

Despite the excitement surrounding the 20th AMAA anniversary, this unfortunate incident has cast a shadow over the prestigious event, raising questions about the organizers’ commitment to fulfilling their promises. The AMAA organizers have yet to release an official response to the situation, but the mounting frustration among Ghanaian creatives and their supporters is clear.
