Samuel Glenn Semakor, widely known as GlennSamm, has been apprehended by the Ghana Police Service in connection with the recent protests organized by the Democracy Hub group in Accra.
In a poignant message shared on his WhatsApp status, GlennSamm expressed his disappointment in the Ghanaian youth’s perceived apathy towards pressing social issues. “This could be my last post or status ,” he lamented, echoing the sentiments of many who believe that expressing democratic views should not lead to criminal charges.
The protests, initiated to highlight the dire consequences of illegal mining and demand urgent governmental action, began with a strong turnout. On the first day, demonstrators filled the streets, demanding accountability and sustainable practices. However, the situation escalated on the second day, leading to the arrest of 42 individuals, with more expected to face legal proceedings.
As the third day of protests unfolded, the atmosphere was markedly subdued. Despite heavy police presence, the streets of Accra remained largely empty, with only a handful of protesters brave enough to voice their concerns. Two individuals carrying placards were also taken into custody, further illustrating the tense climate surrounding the demonstrations.
The Democracy Hub protests are not just about illegal mining; they reflect broader frustrations with the country’s economic challenges and governance issues. As arrests continue, the movement has become a critical platform for citizens to express their discontent and demand change.
