Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon and Deputy Minister of Agriculture, John Dumelo, has urged Ghana’s education authorities to integrate agriculture into the basic school curriculum. He made the call at the 2025 Graduation Ceremony of Brain Hill International School, where he emphasized the importance of introducing children to agriculture at an early age.
“Let’s spark their interest early,” John Dumelo told the crowd of students, parents, and educators. “The sooner children understand agriculture, the more likely they are to see it as a career path and a tool for national development.”
His remarks struck a chord with the audience and echoed a growing sentiment that education in Ghana must evolve to reflect both practical and developmental needs of the country.
The graduation ceremony brought together a cross-section of Ghana’s education and political community, including Sammi Awuku, MP for Akuapem North, as well as representatives from the Ministries of Education and Agriculture. Their presence added weight to what was more than just a school event, it was a platform for serious conversations about the future of education in Ghana.
Speaking at the event, Mary Anane Awuku, Managing Director of Brain Hill International School, underscored the vital role of parents in a child’s educational journey.
“It begins at home,” she said. “Children thrive when parents are not just providers but active participants. They must be there every step of the way, guiding and nurturing, especially beyond the classroom.”
Her sentiments were echoed by Principal Awel Rahamani, who delivered a passionate speech on the need for a more holistic educational approach.
“We are not just building students; we are shaping future citizens,” she said. “The world is shifting from a narrow academic focus to a broader, more holistic model. We need to prepare our children not just for exams, but for life.”
She emphasized the importance of emotional intelligence, adaptability, and moral grounding, stating that these traits are as critical as academic performance in today’s ever-evolving job market.
The graduation ceremony was a showcase of intellect, creativity, and youthful promise. Students graduated across various levels in a display of academic excellence and strong character development, hallmarks of Brain Hill’s educational model. The event highlighted the school’s dedication to fostering both academic rigor and life skills, preparing its students to thrive in a complex world.
Brain Hill International School continues to broaden its reach, with new campuses launched in East Legon and Weija, giving more children access to its distinctive educational offering.
As Ghana seeks new ways to empower its next generation, voices like John Dumelo’s are pushing the nation to think outside the chalkboard and into the fields, homes, and communities where education truly begins.
