MTN Ghana has made a game-changing move in Ghanaian football, unveiling a landmark $2 million sponsorship deal with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), becoming the headline sponsor of all four national football teams: the Black Stars, Black Queens, Black Satellites, and Black Starlets as well as the Elite Under-19 Championship for the next two years.

The deal, announced at a vibrant ceremony held at MTN House in Accra, is set to run until August 2027 and promises to provide crucial financial and logistical support to elevate the preparation, training, and performance of Ghana’s national teams on both continental and global stages.

Speaking at the announcement, MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett called the sponsorship more than just a commercial partnership — describing it as a commitment to national pride, youth development, and sporting excellence.

“At MTN, we believe in Ghana — in the talent of its youth, in the unmatched power of sports to connect people, inspire hope, and in football’s unique ability to tell a nation’s story to the world,” said Blewett.

MTN

MTN’s involvement with Ghanaian football is far from new. The telecommunications giant has been the title sponsor of the MTN FA Cup since the 2010–11 season, helping to restore the historic tournament and provide a platform for over 100 clubs across Ghana’s football pyramid to compete.

“Together with the GFA, we have revived one of Ghana’s most cherished competitions. Today, the MTN FA Cup stands as one of the most fiercely contested events in the country,” Blewett added.

Highlighting MTN’s long-standing support for the Black Stars — from mobilizing fans during Ghana’s maiden FIFA World Cup in 2006 to sponsoring supporters at multiple AFCON tournaments — Blewett declared the new deal a bold, inclusive step forward.

“We are proud to now become the headline sponsor for all four national teams — male and female, junior and senior. This is about inclusion, empowerment, and building a sustainable future for football in Ghana,” he said.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup fast approaching, Blewett expressed MTN’s unwavering dream: to see Ghana lift the trophy for the first time.

“We may not have held the World Cup yet, but that’s not a scar it’s a spark. A fire that drives us to dream bigger. When Ghana wins the World Cup, it won’t just be a football triumph  it will be the triumph of an entire nation and continent that never stopped believing.”

GFA Welcomes Timely Boost

GFA President Kurt Okraku described the deal as a “timely boost” that would enhance the teams’ competitive edge as they chase key goals. The Black Queens are looking to build on their 2024 WAFCON bronze medal with an eye on the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, while the Black Stars focus on qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after missing out on AFCON 2025.

“This partnership strengthens our resolve and opens a new chapter in the development of our national teams,” Okraku stated.

The partnership also reinforces the GFA’s drive to attract corporate backing not just for elite national teams but for broader domestic competitions.
