The organisers of the 26th Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) are revamping one of the show’s most iconic elements: the red carpet.
This year, you can’t just show up and strut — you need an invitation.
Yes, you read that right. The 2025 TGMA is drawing a firm line in the sand. Only officially invited celebrities and dignitaries will grace the main red carpet, where the iconic “Who are you wearing?” moments are captured live on TV. A second, more open red carpet will serve for general media interviews and photoshoots but if you want to be seen, really seen, on the main stage, you’ll need that exclusive pass.
For years, red carpet sessions at the TGMAs have drawn both applause and criticism. From dazzling fashion statements to jaw-dropping wardrobe fails, the red carpet has been a melting pot of style, star power, and, at times, pure chaos. Viewers have often questioned the criteria for who gets interviewed, with some expressing frustration over “random personalities” dominating the spotlight and watering down the event’s prestige.
“The TGMA red carpet used to be the pre-show highlight,” said one fashion blogger. “But in recent years, it felt like a free-for-all. This new rule could bring back the glamour and seriousness we’ve all been craving.”
According to the organisers, this decision is rooted in a desire to restore order, elevate production quality, and reinforce the prestige of the event. This new two-tier red carpet system isn’t just a matter of logistics; it’s a statement one that says: Excellence isn’t optional.
Social media is alight with mixed reactions. Some hail the move as long overdue, arguing that it will prevent clout-chasers from hijacking the spotlight. Others worry it could limit spontaneity and exclude up-and-coming creatives. But one thing’s for sure: people are talking — and that’s the power of bold change.
Saturday, May 10th, 2025, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre, this year’s TGMA is shaping up to be more than an award show , it’s a statement of intent. With production by Charterhouse, and powered by Telecel Connecting Energies, along with support from Guinness, British Council, Close-Up, KPMG, and TV3, the event promises to set a new gold standard in Ghanaian entertainment.
