The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has confirmed that security agencies are investigating possible criminal involvement in the recent fire outbreak at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Power Station.

According to the Minister, a technical committee has been established to determine the root cause of the incident, while law enforcement agencies conduct parallel investigations into any potential criminal elements.

Addressing journalists on Monday, April 27, Mr.John Jinapor explained that the technical committee will undertake an independent and detailed assessment of the fire, while security agencies focus on the criminal dimension.

“I am well aware that the security agencies are also conducting the criminal aspect of the investigations,” he stated.

When asked whether authorities suspect arson, the Minister indicated that no possibility has been ruled out at this stage.

The statement follows a fire outbreak on Thursday, April 23, which affected part of the substation switchyard at the Akosombo facility. The incident disrupted power transmission and impacted a critical component of Ghana’s electricity infrastructure.

The Ghana Grid Company confirmed that the fire occurred at approximately 2:01 p.m., triggering emergency shutdowns and forcing engineers to isolate sections of the national grid. Preliminary estimates indicate that between 720 megawatts and 1,000 megawatts of transmission capacity linked to the dam were affected.

Mr.John Jinapor assured the public that efforts are underway to restore stable electricity supply as quickly as possible. He noted that engineers are working continuously, with early indications suggesting that normal power supply could be restored within the week.

“I have been briefed that engineers seek to restore normalcy within this week,” he added.
