Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has delivered a stirring message of encouragement to the Black Stars ahead of their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, urging the team to display courage, unity, and determination when they face Panama on Wednesday.
The Vice President paid a morale-boosting visit to the Ghana national team’s hotel in Toronto on Tuesday, where she met players, technical staff, and officials to convey the support and goodwill of President H.E. John Dramani Mahama and the entire nation.
Addressing the squad, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasized the significance of the occasion and reminded the players of the pride and expectations they carry as representatives of Ghana on football’s biggest stage.
“The entire nation is behind you,” she told the players. “You carry the hopes and dreams of millions of Ghanaians. Go out there, give your best, and make Ghana proud.”
The Vice President challenged the team to remain disciplined, focused, and united throughout the tournament, stressing that success would depend on collective effort and unwavering belief.
Led by captain Jordan Ayew and head coach Carlos Queiroz, the Black Stars are preparing for a crucial Group L encounter at Toronto’s BMO Field as they seek a positive start to their World Cup campaign.
“Ghanaians from all walks of life are united behind this team,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang added. “We pray for your strength, your safety, and your success. When you step onto that pitch, remember that you are not alone, you carry the spirit of Mother Ghana with you.”
The Vice President’s visit was attended by several distinguished Ghanaian dignitaries, including Chief Justice Baffoe Bonnie, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Canada, H.E. Prof. Dora Francisca Edu-Buandoh, and Nana Otuo Siriboe II, who represented His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The Black Stars will open their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign against Panama on Wednesday, June 17, with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET. A strong result would provide Ghana with an important platform as they pursue qualification from Group L and aim to make a significant impact on the global stage.
With the nation firmly behind them and confidence growing within the camp, the Black Stars will be eager to translate that support into a winning performance when they take to the field in Toronto.
