The Creative Arts Agency has indefinitely postponed the Kumasi edition of the candlelight vigil in honour of the late highlife icon, Daddy Lumba. The event, initially scheduled for Saturday, August 9, 2025, was called off following the declaration of a three-day national mourning period by President John Dramani Mahama.

The announcement came through a press statement dated August 7, 2025, and signed by the Acting Executive Secretary of the Agency, Mr. Gideon Aryeequaye. The statement cited the recent helicopter crash in Adansi on August 6, which claimed the lives of eight prominent Ghanaians—as the reason for the postponement.

“In memory of the eight individuals who tragically lost their lives in the helicopter crash, the planned candlelight vigil in Kumasi has been postponed,” the Agency announced. A new date for the event will be communicated at a later time.

The national tragedy, which has shaken the country, involved the loss of several high-ranking officials including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and former Kumasi mayor and NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong. Also on board were Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, former NDC parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East Mr. Samuel Aboagye, as well as three Ghana Armed Forces personnel: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

In the wake of this devastating event, President Mahama declared a period of national mourning from August 7 to 9, directing that all flags fly at half-mast and urging citizens to join in honouring the memory of the deceased.

The now-postponed Kumasi vigil was intended to follow the successful tribute held in Accra on August 2, where thousands gathered at Independence Square to celebrate the life and legacy of Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu. The Accra vigil featured moving musical performances, heartfelt tributes from fellow musicians, fans, and dignitaries, and a touching candlelight procession that lasted late into the night.

Daddy Lumba, who passed away on July 26, 2025, at the age of 60 after a short illness, remains one of Ghana’s most influential highlife musicians, with a decades-long career that shaped the country’s musical landscape.

In its statement, the Creative Arts Agency expressed deep condolences to the families of the helicopter crash victims and extended sympathies to the nation during this period of collective mourning.
