Afrobeats superstar Davido has shared an intimate glimpse into how his father’s deep-rooted faith and life lessons profoundly impacted his personal and professional journey. Speaking on the Rollingout podcast, Davido reflected on his upbringing in a Christian home and how his father’s teachings have guided him through life’s highs and lows, including the heartbreaking loss of his son, Ifeanyi.
Davido, born David Adedeji Adeleke, grew up in a household deeply anchored in Christian values. His father, a respected businessman and elder in the Seventh-day Adventist Church, emphasized the importance of trusting in God’s plan—a principle OBO admits he didn’t fully grasp until later in life.
“My dad is very successful, but he’s an elder in the church. I grew up as a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and attended a Christian college,” he shared.
Among the many lessons his father imparted, one resonated deeply: “Never question God’s plans.”
Reflecting on the loss of his son Ifeanyi in 2022, Davido admitted that understanding his father’s advice was initially a struggle. The pain of losing his child left him questioning why such tragedy could happen to someone striving to do good. However, as time passed, his father’s wisdom began to resonate.
“I was angry. Sometimes, I would think, ‘Why do bad things happen to good people?’ But my dad always told me, ‘You can’t question God.’”
OBO revealed that a year later, his life took a turn for the better. He and his wife welcomed twins, he released the biggest album of his career, and earned his first Grammy nominations. These blessings brought clarity to his father’s words, reinforcing his belief in God’s plan.
He credits his father’s unwavering faith for shaping his perspective on life and resilience. He explained how trusting in God’s timing has helped him overcome adversity and stay grounded amid success.
“People go through different challenges, but just know that God has your back. Everything happens for a reason,” he emphasized, encouraging others to adopt a mindset of faith and trust.
