Ghanaian Hiplife icon Maradona Adjei Yeboah, popularly known as Guru NKZ, has entered a legal battle with the University of Ghana’s Student Representative Council (SRC) Electoral Commission after his disqualification from the SRC presidential race.
The veteran musician, who had aspirations to lead the university’s student body, was disqualified due to his non-resident status—an issue that has sparked widespread attention and debate across social media platforms.

The SRC Electoral Commission based their decision on Article 30 of the electoral guidelines, which requires that all candidates for the SRC presidency must be residents of a university hall and eligible to contest for a Junior Common Room (JCR) position. During the vetting process, Guru and his running mate, Jeffery Adu Yeboah, disclosed that they were non-residents, which ultimately led to their disqualification from the race.

In response to this decision, Guru’s legal team has filed a petition with the SRC Electoral Commission and the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, seeking a review of the disqualification. Additionally, the team has submitted an interim injunction to the Judicial Board, calling for a temporary suspension of the electoral process until a proper hearing can be held.

In a statement, Guru expressed his determination to ensure that all students, regardless of their residency status, receive equal treatment in the electoral process. “We shall ensure that there is no discrimination towards any student, whether resident or non-resident, able or with special needs, first Degree or PFD, Local or International, Korle-Bu, City Campus, or Distance education, including all the Regional Learning Centers across the length and breadth of the country,” Guru stated.

The news of Guru NKZ’s disqualification has sparked a conversation on social media, with many rallying behind the Hiplife star, who has been a prominent figure in Ghana’s entertainment industry for over a decade. Fans and students alike are following the unfolding legal case with great interest, as it raises questions about the inclusivity of the university’s electoral policies.

Despite the setback, Guru NKZ remains confident that the Judicial Board will grant a fair hearing and deliver a just outcome. His commitment to challenging the status quo has resonated with many, further solidifying his role as a voice for the people—both in the music industry and now, in the realm of student leadership.

As the legal process continues, all eyes will be on the University of Ghana and its SRC Electoral Commission to see how this high-profile case unfolds. The decision could set a significant precedent for future elections at the university, potentially reshaping the way non-resident students are represented in student governance.
