Merqury Quaye, the founder of the Guinness Ghana DJ Awards, has expressed his disgust with a comment made by Kojo Manuel, one of the award winners in this year’s edition. Kojo Manuel objected about the joint award he won for Best MC/Hypeman, claiming that he was the single winner of that category. Kojo, a radio presenter at YFM in Accra, was named Best MC/Hypeman of the Year at the 2024 Ghana DJ Awards, which took place on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at the Palms Convention Centre in Accra, Ghana, with MC Portfolio. During a recent interview on 3 Music TV, Kojo stated, “I don’t believe there is anything like a tie.”
I don’t think Ghana would have an election and declare the NPP and NDC winners. I’ve never understood the concept behind the tie, and I haven’t received an official statement from the Ghana DJ Awards explaining why it happened.” “Everyone is aware of the job I completed during the year under evaluation, so I’m not sure what you’re comparing it to. Unfortunately, we’ve reached the stage where winning an award requires you to explain yourself…,” he added. In response to Kojo’s statements on Hitz FM, Merqury Quaye, founder of the Guinness Ghana DJ Awards, told host Doreen Avio that he was unhappy by what the YFM presenter said on 3Music TV.
“I am quite dissatisfied with Kojo Manuel’s comments on this. It is fine to express your unhappiness with anything, but I believe the tangent he is on leaves a lot to be desired. I’ve heard him state that he doesn’t think there is anything like a tie. It is quite terrible for someone of his caliber to say anything like this. I expect him to know much more than that. There is a tie in several competitions. Even football matches can end in a tie. The Grammys are one of the most well-known award shows. There are ties at the Grammys. You may discuss BET.
If you recall, Sarkodie and Wizkid tied in 2015, but Sarkodie did not go on a rampage like Kojo Manuel is doing now,” Merqury Quaye stated. He wondered why Kojo Manuel had not complained about prior awards he had received from the system. “Aside from that, I believe he should get off his high horse because the same programme named him the greatest MC, which he was quite proud of and mentioned on all platforms. So he should remember that he’s talking about the same platform.
Why didn’t he come out and say that he needed to know why he won Best Hypeman last year? Why didn’t he come out and ask the DJ Awards to explain how he got the Hypeman award the previous two years? So this is why I’m disappointed,” he explained.
