Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah has issued a bold call to Ghana’s national football team, urging players to show greater commitment when representing their country on the global stage. His comments come at a time when many Ghanaians are expressing disappointment with the team’s recent performances, particularly after Ghana failed to secure a win in their opening two matches of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola and Niger.
Stephen Appiah, known for his leadership and dedication during his time with the Black Stars, spoke passionately about the need for players to embrace the honor of representing Ghana. “Players who come to the national team have to be committed. I am not seeing that. They have to be committed because out of a population of 30 something million, you are part of a select 23. It is an honour. You are representing Ghana, and you must make it worth the while,” he emphasized.
Stephen Appiah made these remarks while addressing the Parliamentary Select Committee for Sports on Tuesday. The committee is currently working to address the underwhelming performances not only in football but across various sports disciplines in the country. Concerns have grown over the last five years, with many pointing to a lack of unity and focus within the national teams.
“For the past five years, we are struggling; we are not seeing things like that (commitment),” Appiah said. “You can be a good captain, but it doesn’t mean you can win games. When you and your colleagues have the same goal, that is when you win.”
Ghana, which recently dropped six places in the September FIFA rankings to 70th, is set to face Sudan in October as part of the ongoing AFCON qualifiers. However, the venue remains uncertain after CAF revoked its approval of Ghana’s Baba Yara Stadium.
The Black Stars’ struggles have reignited a national conversation about the passion and commitment needed to bring the team back to its glory days. Appiah’s words have resonated with fans who are looking for renewed energy and dedication from the squad as they prepare for future challenges.
Will this message from a former captain spark the change needed to reignite the Black Stars? Only time will tell as the team gears up for their next crucial match in October.
