As part of his efforts to become acquainted with all units of the Ghana Army, the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Major General (Maj Gen) Bismarck Kwasi Onwona, paid a visit to the 5 Infantry Battalion (5Bn), affectionately known as “The Lions,” at their Battalion Headquarters in Burma Camp.
Briefing the COAS on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, the Commanding Officer (CO), 5Bn Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Kwame Owusu-Afriyie, highlighted some ongoing self-help projects in the Battalion, which include a 120-single-room 3-story for young soldiers, a unit sports complex, a restaurant, and commercial drinking water production.
The “Lion-hene” (king of lions) also identified operational, administrative, and logistical concerns that require immediate attention in order for his unit to perform optimally.
COAS praised the CO 5 Infantry Battalion, Officers, Soldiers, and Defense Civilian Staff for their dedication to duty and support of Command. During an interactive durbar, he urged personnel to be cautious when dealing with personnel from sister security agencies, emphasizing that the Ghana Army and other security agencies are partners rather than adversaries, and that the Ghana Police have the primary responsibility for ensuring internal peace and security.
The Army Chief advised servicemen to be on constant alert and not take the country’s security for granted, as well as to avoid engaging in partisan politics and gambling, which has recently acquired popularity.
